The thing to keep in mind is that it's not really an RTS in the traditional sense-it's more of a real-time wargame. Amp up the strategic difficulty and leave the battle one lower, which should make the odd tactical battle a nice change of pace. I'd recommend using Total Warhammer 2's split difficulties to make the game more fun, though. I enjoy the odd tactical battle in TW, but yeah I basically autobattle whenever I can.

Now it seems like the combat is the afterthought and all the development went into the top level of the game. I'm still marveling about how much effort went into this aspect of the game. I never knew you could play it solely from the main map and not even deal with the battles. It has incredible depth, options and choices.

So I bought WH II and I'm treating it exclusively like a strategy game, not a battle simulator and it has totally changed my view of the game. Obviously I've used the strategy map, but I thought it was merely for upgrades and moving armies around. This was the complete opposite of what I thought TW games were supposed to be. With the recent Steam sale I read a Reddit post about treating TW: Warhammer II as a turn based strategy game and using autocombat for the battles. I didn't give the campaign much of a chance because of my frustration with the fights. I bought TW: Warhammer to try TW in a high fantasy setting and quickly got bored of more blob on blob battles. I loved the Roman stuff but never even played a campaign to conclusion.

Despite trying to micromanage every aspect of the battle, I just never got the hang of it. Every engagement turns into blob-on-blob until someone wins. I've played almost every Total War game and I still suck at the tactical battles.
